MUST READ: Newcastle man sentenced to life after raping his aunt

The Newcastle Regional Court recently sentenced a 27-year-old man to life behind bars, after he repeatedly raped his aunt in September 2015.

According to SAPS KZN Corporate Communications Officer, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, the victim had raised her nephew since he was a child in the Mathukhuza area near Newcastle.

She said the victim could no longer condone his criminal activities and kicked him out of her house.

Thereafter he returned to the house where he repeatedly raped, stabbed and strangled his aunt, before robbing her of her money.

The victim was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The case was reported to the Newcastle SAPS, and later transferred over to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, for further investigations.

It was soon determined the suspect had fled Newcastle.

After investigations, police managed to trace the accused to a prison in Boksburg Gauteng, where he was serving time for a murder he had committed in the area in 2017.

The suspect was transferred to Newcastle, where the courts would ensure he faced the full might of the law for his heinous deeds.

During the trial, DNA samples also linked the suspect to a murder he had committed in the Fernie area, Mpumalanga. The murder trial continues.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, ten years imprisonment for attempted murder and one year imprisonment for robbery.
