MUST READ: Damaged barrier on Drakensberg Drive is a safety hazard to motorists

Concerns have been raised on the safety of all, as many pedestrians used the bridge including students from nearby colleges and educational institutions.

Danger continues to loom for those using Drakensberg Drive.

More than a month after it was reported to the municipality, the metal barrier on the first bridge in Barry Hertzog Park remains damaged and an obstruction to both motorists and pedestrians.

A resident said this showed officials did not care for ratepayers.

Concerns have been raised on the safety of all, as many pedestrians used the bridge including students from nearby colleges and educational institutions.

Likewise, drivers had to exercise caution to not hit obstructions in the lane.

“The damaged safety barrier means students have to walk in the road,” said former councillor, Hannes Liebenberg.

He called the situation ‘dangerous’, and said the problem actually dated back about two years to when bushes had overgrown the bridge.

This he claimed was also reported to the municipality.

Liebenberg went on to say that although the brush was eventually cut, subsequent problems with the fence and barrier had been ignored to date.

Residents believe the matter is now one of utmost urgency.

Although the circumstances of the barrier’s destruction are uncertain, it is believed the barrier and fence were mostly destroyed after a vehicle careened off the roadway.

This was reported to the municipality at the end of July.

Despite this, municipal officials are yet to acknowledge the situation or provide feedback, and have yet to dispatch staff to resolve the problem.
