Vryheid councillor sniffs out the source of a foul smell in the CBD

THE ROTTEN smell lingering in Market Street just as one heads towards East Street is actually not from a corpse, community members may be relieved to know.
The smell, which has been bothering community members as well as business people around the area is actually believed to be rotten food items that may have been left behind after the fire that ravaged through Trade City a few weeks ago.
“I was contacted by business people around the area and they informed me that the smell was unbearable and they were almost certain that it was from a dead body,” said Ward 8’s Councillor Magda Viktor.

After doing some sniffing around (literally), Cllr Viktor however, found that the smell seemed to get stronger as one got closer to the burned Trade City building.
Not knowing what exactly to do, Cllr Viktor informed AbaQulusi Public Safety’s TS Mthembu, who could not take up the matter as this is not what his department deals with.

“I informed Cllr Viktor that there was nothing that I could personally do but I also went on to contact our environmental services officials who then referred the matter to Zululand’s Department of Health. Health inspectors were informed and they are set to come through and look into the matter,” said Mr Mthembu.
The Vryheid Herald contacted TFS (the businesses are owned by the same people) to find out whether they were aware of the situation.
Staff members admitted to having not been aware of the smelly issue. They pointed out that most things were left untouched in the store as per the instructions that were given by insurance.
They did, however, state that they would look into the matter and see where the problem lay.
