The murder trial involving the late Warrant Officer Sascha Naidoo drew to a controversial end.

According to Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube, the 55-year-old man accused of murdering WO Naidoo was found mentally unfit to stand trial by the Madadeni Regional Court.

He was also found unfit to live among society, and will become a State President’s Patient, meaning he will be detained in a mental facility instead of jail.

For the past year, his family and friends have been anxiously awaiting justice to be served, but felt the conclusion of the trial was more of a slap on the wrist than an ‘actual punishment’ for the crime.

Despite this, the family said members could now move on and rebuild their lives.

The top cop of Newcastle’s K9 Unit was stabbed in the inner thigh with spear on June 27, 2017, while attending to a complaint in Madadeni, and was rushed by colleagues to Madadeni Provincial Hospital in a critical condition.

He was stabilised by medical staff for transport to Mediclinic Newcastle.

A convoy consisting of Newcastle 911, SAPS, ambulance fleets, Protection Services officials and the public ensured W/O Naidoo reached the facility within minutes, and he was immediately prepped for emergency surgery.

He remained in the Intensive Care Unit on dialysis, and spent two days fighting for his life.

During his hospitalisation, WO Naidoo’s leg wound turned septic and he underwent a second operation, this time to amputate the leg.

Sadly, he succumbed to his injury on June 29, a shade after 8pm.

The family, and indeed the community at large still feels the impact of his loss, with many still mourning the death of their beloved ‘angel in blue’.
