BREAKING NEWS: Vintage railway locomotive arrives at Fort Amiel Museum – (Photos)

After almost four years of waiting in anticipation, the locomotive finally made its stop at Fort Amiel Museum on Monday.

After almost four years of waiting, the historic railway locomotive has arrived at Fort Amiel Museum.

The locomotive was ferried to the museum today (Monday, October 1) by a fleet of heavy duty vehicles.

Museum curator, Louis Eksteen said he was over the moon.

Placing the locomotive alongside the replica railway station was a massive job, involving two cranes, a transport truck and plenty of manpower.

A portion of the museum’s fence also had to be removed.

Once the locomotive was placed however, celebration began.

Eksteen, museum friend and handyman, Vince Nixon and crane boss, Carel Wolfaardt all raised their hands in victory.

This team effort has marked a new day for local history.

Eksteen said the replica railway station still had to be completed, and is expected to include numerous items salvaged from Newcastle’s historic locales, and will encompass the rich rail and industrial history of the greater Newcastle area.

“At this stage we are seeing what items we can add to this exhibit. This entire project has been funded by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture,” said Eksteen in a previous interview.
