Three injured in shootout with police near Vryheid

Police were miraculously not injured in the shootout, despite the fact that the state vehicle was riddled with bullets.

THREE men are being kept under armed guard at Benedictine Hospital in Nongoma after being seriously injured in a shootout with police last Friday night.

Captain Nkosie Gwala, the communications officer for the Zululand Cluster, said police officers from Nongoma SAPS were patrolling when they came across a suspicious white BMW.

The BMW that Nongoma police were attempting to stop when the occupants opened fire.

“The SAPS members were attempting to stop the vehicle when the occupants of the BMW opened fire on the police. Police officers returned fire and all three men in the BMW were shot and sustained injuries,” said Captain Gwala.

Two firearms and a balaclava were recovered from the vehicle, which may indicate that the men were planning a robbery.
