Mondlo protestors demand that contractors hire local

Only six members of the community were hired to be a part of the team working on site and no one seems to know when or how they were selected.

COMMUNITY members from Ward 12 in Mondlo stood protesting the appointment of a contractor, they claimed, had not been formally introduced to them.

Community members, who stood in protest at the site on Monday morning, said that no details surrounding the commencement of the work on what appears to be new SASSA offices, was communicated with them.

Community members claim to have stumbled upon the site, which was already under construction.

It is alleged that only six members of the community were hired to be a part of the team working on site and no one seems to know when or how they were selected.

“We sat there waiting to speak to the man in charge of the construction company working on the site but he did not arrive. Eventually another guy working on the site arrived with the ward councillor to speak to us,” said Mr Xolani Qwabe who was among those waiting outside the site.

Mr Qwabe owns a small construction business in Mondlo and was among the small business owners who felt that the outsourcing of services was depriving them of putting bread on the table for their families.

The company is said to have since agreed to work with small businesses such as brick layers, sand suppliers and any other small construction businesses wherever they will need more hands.

The Vryheid Herald contacted Ward 12 Councillor, Masesi Manana, but she was unavailable for comment at the time of going to print.
