For residents living close to the George Cross Water Treatment Works, it has become a watery hell. An automated valve that regulates the amount of water in the plant has been dysfunctional for a number of years.

When this practice does not happen, it severely affects neighbouring residents. Hundreds of litres of fresh water flows into their properties, causing a trail of damage in its wake.
One home in Hugh Drummond Road has been especially affected. For many years, the occupants have had to deal with flooding in the yard and property. Past and present occupants from the home have vented their frustration through the Estcourt News.

Besides the obvious damage to their property and gross waste of clean water, the residents want the district municipality to repair the valve, which would be a solution.
Responding to a media inquiry almost a month later, Uthukela District Municipality Communication Unit’s Jabulani Mkhonza said there has been extensive damage to the infrastructure at the Tom Cross Reservoir.
“Currently the procurement process is underway. Once this is finalised, the appropriate service provider will be appointed to carry out the necessary work that needs to be done in order to rectify the problem,” added Mr Mkhonza.
