• 1887 – The Johannesburg Stock Exchange was established.
• 1895 – Dr Ernst Gideon Malherbe, SA educationist, was born in Luckhoff, OFS.
• 1922 – Dr Chris Barnard, medical practitioner who performed the first heart transplant, was born.
• 1952 – Mayibuye Uprising: black South Africans peacefully stood up for their rights.
• 1958 – All African People Conference held in Accra, Ghana.
• 1974 – Penny Heyns, South African swimming star, was born.
• 1985 – Nigeria cut its diplomatic missions.
• 1989 – Mandela met PAC leader Jeff Masemola.
• 1991 – Minister of Law and Order Hernus Kriel announced the formation of a new police unit.
• 1999 – A painting by SA painter Irma Stern was auctioned for the record price of R1.1 million in Johannesburg.
• 2006 – President Thabo Mbeki led a government delegation to the funeral of former state president PW Botha.
