Many residents would agree that Estcourt streets are fast becoming mini-dumpsites. The sight of refuse bags lining majority of residential and central business district streets again this week is evident that Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality has not yet successfully repaired both the refuse compactor trucks.
Refuse removal has taken a nosedive for the past three months.

This vital service has become sporadic and the impact is felt throughout town.
Every week, the Estcourt News is inundated with calls from residents who express their concerns about health, aesthetic and level of service. Some residents are now reporting that not only are dogs feasting on the decaying rubbish, they have now sighted worms and maggots squirming around in the waste that has been lying on the roadside for days, going on weeks.
Despite an outcry from locals for answers and alternatives, the local municipality has not publicly released any information about the current plan for refuse removal.
More than two weeks ago, Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize said that both refuse compactor trucks were inoperable.
He assured ratepayers that repairs were in the pipeline.
He said that the municipality anticipated that the service would return to its routine by November 2. It’s obvious that these plans failed.
