International tourists walk in the footsteps of Gandhi and Mandela, through Ladysmith
The main focus of their joint mission is to spread the message of peace and non-violence given to this world by great iconic leaders

A group of international tourists made their way on foot into Ladysmith recently as part of their Peace Walk in South Africa, from Johannesburg to Mvezo via Durban.
The five men are currently walking 1200km as part of their journey, travelling in the footsteps of Gandhi and Mandela.
The Peace Walk was “sent on its way” from Constitution Hill in Johannesburg by Indian Consulate General Dr KJ Srinivasa on October 2, the 149th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
The group is led by Nitin Sonawane (27) from Pune in India. He has been on foot and cycling for the last 23 years, travelling across 18 countries and more than 20,000km. Nitin is on a three-year mission to spread the message of Gandhi’s non-violence teachings to the world.

The group is blessed to have Ikeda (39), who is a Buddhist monk from Japan. His guru had deep interactions with Gandhi; he himself being a compassionate human being.
Jalandhernath Channole (44) is also part of the group and has been associated with the Gandhi Ashram – Seva Gram in Wardha near Nagpur in India for the past 28 years.
Sangram Patil (26) is an MBA student who is committed to social reform.
The group’s final member is Yogesh Mathuria (61), who is known as Vishwa Mitra. He has dedicated his life over the last 11 years to world peace after working in the global IT industry for 30 years.
The main focus of their joint mission is to spread the message of peace and non-violence given to this world by great iconic leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
The group stopped in Ladysmith, where they had a brief stay with the Riga family before making their way to Spioenkop Dam.
Nitin says, “In Ladysmith, we were shown love and support, as we bowed to all and stopped to speak to people.”
