Water restrictions are back – so make sure you save

The river is almost stagnant and uThukela Water has had no choice but to restrict the bulk supply during the night, starting this week.

Water restrictions are back and again it is the homes in the upper part of town that will be the hardest hit.
Umzinyathi District Municipality has announced that as a ‘first precaution’ to save water as dam levels plummet, water will be restricted in Endumeni from 9pm to 4am. During the previous drought of two years ago, similar restrictions meant that homes located in areas which are higher than the surrounds were without water while the lower parts of Dundee were not affected because of the natural gradient of the water pipes.

So good to see Tom Worthington Dam living again

Nomonde Nzimakwe of Umzinyathi said residents are urged to use water sparingly.
“The low flow in the Buffalo River is putting pressure on the system. The river is almost stagnant and uThukela Water has had no choice but to restrict the bulk supply during the night, starting this week.
“Dam levels are also dropping. The rain we have had so far has had no effect on the dam or river levels. The exceptional heat has also seen an increase in evaporation levels. The high consumption rate means we have no choice but to implement these restrictions.”

Figures from the Dundee Research Station show that in September, 30,99 mm of rain fell and in October 75 mm – which is well below the average rainfall.
