Ageing infrastructure to blame for series of pipe bursts in Estcourt

A total of six water pipe bursts were experienced in Estcourt last week

Uthukela District Municipality has once again issued an apology for failing service delivery.

Last week a series of water pipe bursts plagued residents in the Brewitt Road, Pylon Avenue and surrounding areas.
At the end of October a burst pipe at the Archie Rodell Water Treatment Plant saw majority of the town and surrounding towns subjected to rolling water cuts.

The common denominator between these incidents appear to be ageing infrastructure and residents neglecting to report water pipe bursts when they happen, which avoids the reservoirs from running dry.

Another saddening fact in this story is the hundreds of litres of fresh water that is wasted. Like in the case of last Thursday, a resident living in the vicinity of Brewitt Road reported that clean water was flowing down several streets since 8pm on Wednesday.

The water was still running by 4pm the next day. The evidence of the water pipe repairs scars many roads in the areas.

Uthukela District Municipality Communication Manager Jabulani Mkhonza confirmed that a total of six water pipe bursts were experienced in Estcourt last week.

“The main reason why we keep on experiencing frequent pipe bursts is simply because our pipeline infrastructure is ageing. If the pipe bursts, then the pipeline area nearby becomes weak, making it vulnerable to a possible burst. The burst pipes in question have since been repaired. We would like to pass our sincere apology to anyone affected by this unfortunate event,” said Mr Mkhonza.
