Interesting historical events happened in this country on this day (November 22) in years gone by. You may or may not know about some of these events.

Here are a few of them:

  • 1962 – Seven people were killed as violence erupted in Paarl. This after over 200 men armed with axes, pangas, sticks and possibly a few revolvers decided to attack the prison and police station in the ‘white’ town of Paarl.
  • 1977 – Wiseman Khuzwayo, reporter for the Durban Daily News, handed himself over to police.
  • 1983 – Keith McFadden and Zwelakhe Nyanda were killed.
  • 1986 – Oscar Pistorius was born.
  • 1988 – Professor Raymond Arthur Dart, SA anthropologist and expert on the Taung skull, died in Sandton.
  • 1990 – A group of six white and several black rebel army troops mounted another coup attempt on November 21/22 in Transkei, a black ‘homeland’.
  • 1994 – South Africa signed an agreement with Switzerland to support the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP).
  • 1995 – The First Draft of the Constitution was published.
