Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality retrenchments on hold

The municipality has requested a neutral facilitator to be appointed by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration

In the wake of the recent announcement that Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality intends on retrenching a large amount of its workforce, there has been divided opinion.

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) has criticised the retrenchment, reasoning the municipality could cuts costs by tightening their security and outsourcing budgets.

The newly-formed Ratepayers Association was relieved, seeing as the municipality’s inflated staff content was one of the biggest expenses.

Municipal Administrator Thandolwethu Manda has responded about the municipality’s current plan.

“The municipality has requested a neutral facilitator to be appointed by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). Those discussions will be open and fair with the intention to reduce employee costs. We await confirmation from the CCMA as to when the negotiation will start,” commented Mr Manda.
