One of the foreign business owners provided his input and expressed his annoyance over the abortion posters plaguing our town

Growing concerns from the Ward 10 community over safety prompted a meeting last Wednesday.

Ward Councillor Edith Lite convened a meeting at the Estcourt Police Station to address two main concerns that were brought to her attention.

These are, the fights at high schools and whether taverns in the area were operating legally. Wednesday’s meeting was poorly attended, with majority of the stakeholders failing to attend, without providing an apology.

Ms Lite said that she had invited principals from local high schools and officials from the municipality, the Social Development and Community Safety and Liaison departments as well as a security company, none of whom attended.

Estcourt Station Commander Colonel Kheswa was unfortunately delayed at a meeting in Ladysmith and Captain Zondi took notes, questions and suggestions for a follow-up meeting when the Colonel would be available.

The meeting was postponed for Monday at 11am however; again most of the essential stakeholders did not attend. The follow up meeting was held at the board room.

Locals and concerned business owners attended the meeting where residents got to exchange information about conditions in the neighbourhood with the police.

One of the foreign business owners provided his input and expressed his annoyance over the abortion posters plaguing our town.

“If you do see anyone putting the posters up, call us and we will investigate the matter,” explained Captain Mbatha.

He added that all the issues have been noted and will be consolidated for a way forward. An immigration officer, who is based at the Estcourt Home Affairs office, distributed his contact details at the meeting.

It was also mentioned that Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be operational soon. The meeting concluded with attendees agreeing to meet for a follow-up meeting on January 9 in 2019.

“Until then, if you have any issues, contact us. Such meetings are very important and this was long overdue in Estcourt,” said the Estcourt Police Station Commander Colonel Kheswa.
