The December 9 storm: Cutting a trail of destruction across Endumeni

More rain is expected today and motorists are urged to take care on the debris-covered roads

The December 9 storm struck with intensity on Sunday afternoon cutting a swathe of destruction across Endumeni. Roofs were torn off at Correctional Services, Glencoe, and the Total Garage in the town was also hard hit. Trees were down in most parts of the town.

The Simpson’s farm, Uithoek, outside the town was turned white under a cover of hail. Widespread damage was reported.

In Dundee, trees tumbled down and several garden walls collapsed. A part of the roof on the Endumeni Municipality was also torn off and the roof at the DHS Boys Hostel, Tatham Street, was damaged.

The Steenkoolspruit came down in a flood – the water turned black because of the pollution that flows into the river. The river ultimately joins the Buffalo River.

Falls of between 60-80mm were recorded in the area.  The traffic light on the corner of Karel Landman and Grey Streets is hanging in the road and motorists are urged to take care as most roads are covered with debris.

More reports of damage are expected to come in this morning.
