Newcastle Library contractor may be taken to court

2019 deadline for Newcastle Library?

Newcastle Library may only reopen in February next year.

It is almost a year since the library was closed for renovations, but the dust has yet to settle in this contentious matter.

Now the municipality is weighing up going the legal route.

It was originally reported the renovations and repair work would be complete at the end of September, and this date was pushed forward to the end of October instead.

These deadlines have not been met.

Following a meeting of the Executive Committee (Exco) on November 28, it was stated the contractor had requested an extension into January 2019, in order to be complete by February.

Exco members however were not satisfied.

Mayor Makhosini Nkosi confirmed all invoicing matters with the contractor had been ironed out and believed there were no further reasons for delay.

The matter has since been referred to the Legal Services Department.

Throughout the renovations to Newcastle Library, many members have turned to the Lennoxton Library to satisfy their literary needs.

Resident Gert Boshoff said of the closure of Newcastle Library, “The word inconvenience isn’t strong enough.”
