What to do with your pets when travelling this December?

It is very important for every pet owner to make separate arrangements for their pets this December

As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to ensure your fur babies are taken care of at all times.

This includes being fed, bathed and giving them as much attention as they need and desire.

Therefore, going away on holiday requires additional planning to ensure your animals are still well taken care of while you are not there.

Heather Gero of the Newcastle SPCA explains why it’s beneficial to have your pets placed in boarding kennels in your absence:

“Dogs and cats are not always as safe as owners think when left at home alone or even in the care of strangers,” she says.

“It is good to remember that very few dogs are trained to be watch dogs and it is not fair either to expect them to ‘police’ your property while you are away.”

“A well-meaning neighbour, domestic worker, friend or family member may not have the trained supervision that you, the owner may have and pets often fall ill or even run away as a result of this”, she continues.

There are also the dangers of your pet not being fed correctly, being neglected or running away due to your gates being left open or worse, they might even end up being run over by motorists.

Therefore Gero suggests it is much wiser to and safer to have your pet stay at a boarding home where dedicated and professional staff will take of your pets the way they needed to be looked after.

“Here they will be fed according to your schedule and they will receive regular individual attention. At the Newcastle SPCA, we can offer your pet a loving home away from home and you, the pet owner, peace of mind.”
