Safety tips when shopping online

Online shopping has become a global phenomenon and has allowed consumers the opportunity to sit back, relax and shop comfortably without the hassle.

In a world that’s constantly on the move, it’s heartening to know some things do not require you to even move from your seat.

This makes shopping for any occasion easier, so you can avoid the mall rush while getting some last minute shopping done.

Online shopping has become a global phenomenon and has allowed consumers the opportunity to sit back, relax and shop comfortably without the hassle.

We (the Newcastle Advertiser) have compiled a list of five reasons why it is better to shop online this December:

  • It is a lot more convenient than actually going to the shops and standing in queues.
  • The prices can be way better, with many online shopping retailers offering online discounts.
  • It’s easier to get your gift to relatives who live far away.
  • There is more of a variety online.
  • You can shop at any time, day or night.

 Safety tips when shopping online:

  • Make sure you are buying from a reliable and trusted site.
  • Always check the website’s rating and credibility (e.g. how long they have been trading for).
  • Watch out for strange emails and links requesting personal information. If it appears to be fishy, then DO NOT buy from them.
  • Check your bank statements on a regular basis to ensure no money is being deducted from your account without your knowledge.
  • Never pay a deposit for an order online.
  • Find out where your friends and family are buying from so that you know you are buying from a trusted site.
  • Make sure the photo of the item you are buying matches the description.
  • Be very careful when purchasing electronics online, because they tend to get damaged during the shipping/courier period.
  • If the ‘seller’ sounds sketchy, then scroll past. Your gut feeling is almost never wrong!
  • Use strong passwords when creating profiles on online shopping sites.
