‘Historic home’ in Estcourt goes up in flames

A fire on Saturday afternoon has extensively damaged the property

A place once steeped in history and brotherhood has been reduced to an ashy skeleton. This was the fate of a residence that was previously the Estcourt Round Table clubhouse, which is situated close to Heritage Road.

A fire on Saturday afternoon has extensively damaged the property.

Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality was contacted to give details about what could have started the fire and the extent of the damage.

The Estcourt News also enquired about what the house was being used for and what the future plans are. No response was given at the time of going to print.

Estcourt Round Table 41er Paul Wagenaar has fond memories of the former clubhouse. He explained that Tablers were ‘kicked out’ of the clubhouse by the municipality.

“They insisted they wanted it for a guy who was dealing with herbs but that didn’t work out so the house was abandoned,” said Mr Wagenaar.

He was in shock when he saw plumes of smoke in the air while he was playing golf. “I am really sad about this. The clubhouse was taken away and neglected. We hosted international guests there, we work for a good cause to help in the community and didn’t bother anyone,” added Mr Wagenaar.
