Growing mess outside public pool in Forderville is finally cleaned up

"Remember hygiene starts in your own home, so please stop polluting your environment by littering in your neighbourhood"

The growing mound of refuse in front of the Bert Tucker Swimming Pool in Forderville is enough to make you cast a second look.

It has, according to one resident from the area, been a cause for embarrassment and disgust for visitors. Domestic waste is being discarded in front of the pool, reportedly by residents from surroundings areas.

Late refuse removal stirs up frustration

A resident who wished to remain anonymous explained that two waste skips were placed in this area by Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality when the refuse removal routine became unstable.

Shortly before the festive season, the skips were removed but the dumping did not stop.

“I have called the municipality several times to come and clean up the area and also to advise the residents of the correct collection days and against dumping their refuse here but I have received no response,” said the frustrated resident.

She explained that the rotting mess has not only been an eyesore and health concern, it has caused embarrassment to her family.

“When I got visitors during Christmas, the dirt outside was the talk of the night. It was like our town was being degraded. We pay for services that we do not receive. What’s happening to Estcourt? Look at the potholes, refuse and the verges,” fumed the resident.

Outspoken Estcourt resident Angela Keyter has also espied this messy heap.

“This is a public area for swimmers to go and enjoy. Can the municipality not see this when they go and pick up refuse?” asks Mrs Keyter.

But the blame does not only lie at the doors of the municipality.

The dumped refuse was finally cleaned up on Tuesday.

“Residents you should know which day is your collection day, so you to must refrain from just dumping every day. I trust once it does get picked up, that everyone responsible will adhere to the day of pick up. Remember hygiene starts in your own home, so please stop polluting your environment by littering in your neighbourhood,” she added.

After weeks of complaints, the refuse was finally cleared on Tuesday.
