Roaming livestock pose danger to pilots at Ladysmith airfield

The animals damage the fences as they attempt to gain entry into the aerodrome premises

Pilots are urged to be wary of roaming cattle and goats that have been spotted at the Ladysmith Aerodrome.

A local pilot, who requested the media not to mention his name, says he fears for the safety of pilots who fly into Ladysmith and are unaware of the situation.

For one thing, the animals damage the fences as they attempt to gain entry into the aerodrome premises.

More than that, it is extremely dangerous if a plane has to make an emergency landing and an animal is on the airstrip.

If a cow or goat is hit by an incoming plane, a terrible accident could ensue, leading to loss of human life.

Roaming livestock is a constant problem in the CBD, Acaciavale and Hospital Park areas, and along the N11 (Newcastle road).
