uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko and Speaker PG Strydom, together with various municipal sections and officials, headed off on Friday, February 1, to Hlalanathi Resort in Bergville (under Okhahlamba Local Municipality) to conduct a site inspection as part of the Thuma Mina campaign.
The mayor and his team were welcomed with open arms by the management.
Hlalanathi Resort was found to comply with municipal bylaws, and the mayor was satisfied with the high standard of cleanliness at the resort.
After the site visit in Bergville, the team went to visit the water scheme in Rookdale, where it is alleged that the residents have challenges when it comes to accessing service delivery.
The mayor acknowledged the challenges and appreciated the fact that members of the community had raised issues concerning water, broken or neglected boreholes, and job opportunities within the district.
The mayor also gave clarity about the signed agreement between uThukela and Umgeni Water. He said the partnership agreement entered into between Umgeni Water and uThukela will assist the municipality in rendering effective water services. Umgeni was handed Spioenkop Dam to be the first and major project to take care of as a long-term goal and solution.
The community asked the municipality to notify them of the water-shedding schedule, as they sometimes don’t have water for over two weeks at a time. Mayor Mazibuko reassured the community that most of their concerns / challenges will be addressed and attended to immediately.
The team then visited Mnweni River to inspect the water pipeline crossing the river.
