Mrs Africa launches women empowerment foundation

Mrs Africa Ambassador in Asia, Zandi Gabela, is using her influence to empower women.

The Newcastle-born starlet, Zandi Gabela has become a household name and now she is using her power to empower women in need.

Gabela hails from Newcastle and went to school in Blaauwbosch. She recently won the title of Mrs Africa Ambassador 2018 in Asia. Here, she learnt that Mrs Africa is all about giving back to the community.

“You must be yourself, trust God and have faith.”

Gabela spends a lot of her time caring for others; from daily visits to correctional services, fitness boot camps, and developing skills of women in need.

This lead to her eventual co-founding a women’s group called the Women First Foundation.

Women First Foundation

The Women First Foundation that Gabela co-founded aims to empower women through education.

They aim to empower women with skills and training and essential life skills, and especially on how to take care of themselves financially.

This is the only group in Newcastle that specifically helps women in need. The Foundation offers financial and emotional support to women who have been through abuse or are fighting in court cases of domestic violence.

“We often travel to other places like Johannesburg or Durban to offer help for those who need it.”

Co-founder Nhlakanipho Dlamini, 21, says that women are too scared to speak here, for fear of shame or even further abuse. But the purpose of the Women First Foundation is to give a voice to these vulnerable women, through education and assistance.

Education Eradicates Poverty. This is the the Foundation’s theme for the year: eradicating poverty through education. And on the 12th of February, they are having a drive that is focussing on collecting sanitary pads for girls in school.

“Girls are not able to go to school because they cannot afford basics like sanitary pads.” Dlamini says.

However, in order to go forward with their project, Women First Foundation pleads with local businesses and citizens to donate sanitary pads and be a part of their projects for the months to come.

When asked what they plans and goals are for this foundation, Dlamini states; “I am going to take this international.”

The drive and commitment of the Foundation’s five members bears testament to their impeding growth.
