Mayor meets with angry community members who want their problems solved

The community had blockaded all entrances to the area with rocks and tree branches

uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko – accompanied by Alfred Duma Deputy Mayor T Hadebe, together with the Technical Services team and officials – went to visit Tsakane yesterday morning (February 14) to attend to community complaints regarding water, sewage overflow and housing in the area.

The community had blockaded all entrances to the area with rocks and tree branches.

Addressing the issue of housing, Alfred Duma Deputy Mayor Hadebe acknowledged the challenges they face in relation to this matter. She assured the community that the contractor to rectify shoddy houses has been appointed and is already on site. The municipality says it will implement the rectification and storm damage programme to deal with the issue.

Concerning sewage that is overflowing, Mayor Mazibuko mentioned the recent meeting that was held with the MEC for Human Settlements. He said it was established that the housing project in the area was badly carried out and interfered with the sewer system.

He also said that vandalism and the illegal dumping of foreign objects into the sewer lines was problematic.

The municipality is currently assessing sewer blockages. The two pumps for the sewer station will then be procured and installed. As a short-term solution, a sewer jet will be utilised to unblock the sewer lines.

The mayor then introduced the contractor who will undertake the sewer project.

The Alfred Duma team will be clearing debris in the sewer and drainage system.

The roads were cleared to make way for a team of plumbers to do their work.
