The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema appeared in the Newcastle Magistrate Court today, on charges of violence and violating  the Riotous Assemblies Act of 1956.

Malema filed an application to the Pretoria High Court in December challenging the constitutionality of the laws used to charge him.

Malema was charged twice for contravening the Riotous Assemblies Act over comments he made to supporters in Newcastle and Bloemfontein.

In 2014 he told the EFF’s elective conference in Bloemfontein: “We’re going to occupy the unoccupied land because we need land. For us to eat‚ we must have the land. For us to work‚ we must have the land.”

In June of 2016, Malema reportedly urged local supporters to invade land which ‘whites had no claim to’ in South Africa.

His case has been postponed to July 8.
