Water issues addressed in Chieveley area, Colenso

All the boreholes that were reportedly not functioning properly have been fixed

Water issues have been a huge problem in the Chieveley area, with many protests taking place recently.

uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko, accompanied by a team of technicians and officials, visited Chieveley (near Colenso) recently to give feedback on the progress made so far regarding community issues.

Acting area engineer Sakhile Dube took the community through the progress that has been made.

A water tanker was dispatched, but couldn’t reach certain areas due to wet weather. All the boreholes that were reportedly not functioning properly have been fixed. The mayor emphasised that all the other areas that are without boreholes will be assisted.

On the issue of water tankers, he said a roster will be developed to service the area.

On hiring a driver from the area, as requested, he told the community that, for now, there are no driver posts or a budget. The mayor committed to engage with the uThukela District management team to resolve the other outstanding issues.

The team then went to Thembalihle, where it was alleged that people had blockaded the road while protesting against water shortages in this area. He told the protesters that the project to supply water to the whole community of Weenen is underway.

Water tankers were dispatched to the area and will continue to service them as a short-term solution until the engine pumps are fixed.
