Municipal Manager says – refuse collection is back to normal

Municipal staff have been normalising refuse collection following the recent refuse removal backlog

Catching up with the refuse removal backlog is what municipal staff has been tasked with. A week’s worth of domestic refuse has been gathering in residential and central business district (CBD) streets.

Residents have vented their frustrations via social media, with many calling for a collective approach of dumping refuse in front of the municipal building.

Refuse has been growing in mounds on the sidewalks, with complaints of health hazards, the foul smell as well as its unsightliness being the topics of conversation.

At the root of the problem lies a growing discontentment at the level of service delivery received from Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

Addressing the refuse removal delay, Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize assures residents that “the collection schedule is now back to normal.”

Substantiating, Mr Mkhize said that the backlog in residential areas was eradicated during the weekend; however black bags lining the streets in some residential areas and the CBD were still evident on Monday afternoon.

Residents in the Kwezi area will have to wait a little longer, said Mr Mkhize on Monday morning, this is due to the excessive workload staff experienced.

“The collection schedule is now back to normal and we request adherence from residents. This means that community members must only take out their refuse on normal collection days, since the remaining backlog will be covered during the normal collection schedule,” he added.
