Watch: Residents fix their own potholes in Ladysmith

While they were at work in the blazing sun, people stopped to thank them and even brought them cool drinks on noticing they were hot and sweaty

Potholes are a huge problem faced by motorists every day, but how many of us consider being proactive and doing something about the situation ourselves? Well, three frustrated Reservoir Road residents have done just that.

Neil McKenzie, Ronny Mntembu and Herman Brits worked in the scorching sun last Monday (March 11) to fix the road surface where Reservoir Road meets up with Chevril Road.

With the necessary machinery and materials to fix the “craters”, the trio got to work and didn’t stop until they were totally satisfied with the outcome.

“We complained to the local municipality numerous times about the huge potholes in our street.

We phoned them on a weekly basis, but had no luck, so we decided we would do it ourselves,” says Mr Brits.

People living in the area are grateful to these three Samaritans for their good deed.

In fact, while they were at work in the blazing sun, people stopped to thank them and even brought them cool drinks on noticing they were hot and sweaty.

DA councillor Sharon Buys says, “Well done to Mr McKenzie and the other two men for their role in helping the community. However, it is a great pity that people have to do their own maintenance.”

As you can see, we have people with gumption in our community who will go the extra mile to help others.
