Stadium packed as MEC opens Bhekuzulu library

The library has been placed in such a way that all members of the Bhekuzulu community can have easy access.

The MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Bongi Sithole-Moloi visited Vryheid to officially open the new Bhekuzulu library today.

There was barely space to move in the Old Bhekuzulu stadium as community members pushed and shoved to obtain meal packages before heading into the massive marque tent where they would be entertained by various local talents as they waited for officials to arrive.

Local traditional arts group Bayede entertained.

The day started with a ribbon cutting ceremony and an official tour of the library, which offers a wide range of library services including an estimated 3000 books, learner support materials and tertiary textbooks to benefit tertiary students.

Children of all ages will be catered for at the new library.

The library also boasts a toy collection targeted at early childhood development (ECD), a study area that is said to accommodate an estimated 100 people at a time, five public internet access computers as well as toilet facilities.
The location of the library is said to have played a major role during the early stages of it’s planning. The department is said to have been looking to place the establishment in a central position within the township as a means to make it easily accessible to all members of the Bhekuzulu community.

The library is said to be very secure as there will be security guards at the gate 24/7.

With this week being National Library Week, the MEC encouraged members of the Bhekuzulu community to use the library to enhance their knowledge.

“As we celebrate Library Week, we also believe in this year’s theme ‘Collaborate @ your library’ and invite people to be active patrons of the libraries by registering as library users and also to be part of the reading and writing clubs,” she said.
