The theme of the day was ‘community dialogue on the human rights and responsibility’. Mr Nkabinde the Chairperson of OSS said the purpose of Sukuma Sakhe is to fight against crime, illness, and poverty and to bring the government departments close to the community; as some of the people cannot afford to travel to the central business district for help.
Government departments gave messages of support. The Education Department said that everyone has a right to education, emphasising that no child should have to stay at home.
The department’s message was ‘to build our nation, we have to work together – from mother to child and child to the educator’.
The South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) spoke about grants and explained that there now are different types of grants. The department also registers grants for orphans who are at school, if they are above 18 years; the grant is renewed if no one supports the child.
The Department of Home Affairs talked about children’s registration, which has to be done within 30 days of birth.
The Ward Councillor Mr Mlaba thanked the Inkosi Langalibalele Operation Sukuma Sakhe team for visiting his ward and also thanks the government departments for the messages of support that were given to the community and the services that were rendered.
