66 years on and the love is still strong

"John is always the perfect gentleman," smiles Wynne Muller. "We still have the romance. He still buys me flowers and still holds my hand... And he always compliments me."

JOHN and Wynne Muller hail from an era where things were built to last and ‘forever’ meant something far more lasting than it does today.

Even now, after 66 years of marriage, there is no denying that this couple is still very much in love. At 92 years of age, John, who celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, still smiles lovingly, a sparkle in his eye as he looks over at his wife, who celebrated her 85th birthday on March 29 and reminisces about the first time he saw her.

“I liked the look of her,” he muses, adding jokingly, “She had lovely legs…”

Wynne blushes and laughs at her husband’s comment and quips, “No, don’t publish that…” but the banter between this inspiring couple only attests to their advice to modern couples that laughter is key to keeping the love strong.

“You’ve got to laugh together every day,” advises Wynne. “And keep your eyes on Jesus…”
“God’s been so good to us,” she explains. “He’s always been there for us and given us peace, through all of the trials we have faced,” she looks over at John and affirms, “We’ve had a truly blessed life… God’s got to be the basis of it.”

At this point, John adds, “She’s a very gifted woman… there’s nothing she can’t do.”

“Young couples have a difficult time these days,” she says. “In our day, mothers did not have to work outside of the home. I was blessed to be born when I was. But the best thing you can do is trust in God. In marriage, you make a promise to God and you must remain faithful and always uphold each other in your marriage. Keep your eyes on Jesus and never go to bed angry.”

Wynne describes John as a spiritual father to so many people, especially at the Methodist church here in Vryheid where they are steadfast members of the congregation.Andrew Strick is one of the many who see John as a spiritual father and popped in for a visit and a slice of cake to celebrate the momentous occasion with the couple.

“John has been a real inspiration to me,” says Andrew. “He is a faithful man and I cannot think of a couple more loving and caring than John and Wynne.”

Heather Gibbons, who also visited them on their wedding anniversary on April 4, is a dear friend of the couple and explains how she and Wynne grew together in faith through the Methodist Church.
