Police intercept car and recover firearm from passengers

A driver who offered two men a lift did not realise they were carrying an unlicensed firearm and ammunition

An unsuspecting driver and passenger were in for a surprise on Monday when police stopped their vehicle and searched it. The driver was travelling on the R74 close to Weenen when the suspicions were raised for a police officer from the Ladysmith Tactical Response Team.

“The vehicle had four occupants in it; three males and a female. The officer roped in assistance from Ladysmith K9 officers who were in the vicinity. The vehicle was stopped and a search was conducted,” explained police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.

During the search, questioning revealed that the two male passengers had requested a lift from the driver, this pair was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and ammunition.

The men, aged 21 and 31, were arrested and made a brief appearance in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“The suspects are due back in court on later this week. The recovered firearm will be sent to the ballistic laboratory to ascertain if it has been involved in any crimes in the republic,” added W/O Khan.
