Service delivery plans revealed to Khetani community

Locals were pleased to note that water service upgrades and repairs are underway

The UThukela District Speaker, Cllr PG Strydom and Cllr G Ndaba led a team composed of officials, the Chief Whip for Okhahlamba Municipality Cllr Bhengu and Cllr Mfuphi in visiting the Khetani area, near Winterton, last week.
The outreach is a continuation of the #Thuma Mina UThukela District Outreach Campaign now coined the #Khawuleza Campaign.

As part of an on-going commitment to ensure service delivery, the Speaker updated the community on progress made in ensuring that the community has access to water and safe ablution facilities.

During the previous engagement with the community, municipal officials received reports of seven broken hand pumps and poor access to clean and potable water. The Speaker was pleased to report that all the hand pumps have been fixed and water is now accessible for community consumption.

She further reported that there is an additional production borehole that has been drilled and this will assist to increase water volume at the water reservoir. “We have further worked with the farmers to introduce hand pumps on their land for the benefit of farm dwellers.

“This is a positive step forward for farm dwellers in the ward,” she said.

Cllr Strydom also reported that the construction of ablution facilities has restarted. This process had stopped after the service provider was not paid, due to challenges experienced. The municipality has made progress in establishing a financially stable institution; the service provider has been paid and work is currently underway. The second session of the day was held at the Dukuza Thusong Centre whereby the Deputy Mayor Cllr NW Mchunu, Ward Cllr Hlatshwayo and officials engaged with the community.

The Deputy Mayor explained that the aim of these meetings was to ensure that UThukela attends to all communities.
Members interacted with the water section on issues affecting water provision and also identified a few areas where they would like the municipality to help protect springs.

“UThukela District Municipality remains committed in turning the tide around, indeed it is not business as usual. Operation #Khawuleza is about the speedy response to service delivery issues and backlogs. In building South Africa together, the District Municipality will continue to put its efforts at improving peoples’ lives,” said the Deputy Mayor.
