Music band will offer food for the soul

Blaque Note are hard at work as they have been promoted as the official house band to perform at the Newcastle Farmer’s Market, set to take place on June 29 at The Pines Wedding and Conference Village.

What do you get when a drummer, bass guitarist, saxophonist, keyboard player and a vocalist come together?

A group of five talented musically inclined friends, brought together by the love of music, which gave rise to the Newcastle band known as Blaque Note.

Influenced by various genre’s, Blaque Note call their style of music progressive as they were inspired by gospel, soul, pop and jazz and other music genres.

“The music we play caters for every listener. We tried to break away from being classified in a specific genre and rather wanted to create our own,” they said collectively.

The beat goes on…

Drummer Thando, who has been playing drums since 2012, said he was encouraged by his family to learn to play and his passion has increased over the years. He went on to study at a music school where he learned to interpret music.

All about that bass

Four years later he met Njabulo who is the band’s bass guitarist. Njabulo who has been in the music industry for more than 10 years, said his love for music was instinctive as both his parents were musicians.

“I grew up in a family of musicians. Music has always played a major role in my life,” he expressed.

Having played the keyboard and drums, and being a vocalist and song writer, Njabulo’s zest for playing the bass guitar was what his heart was set on.

Ebony and ivory

Linda who is the band’s keyboard player attested his talent to being exposed to a church environment, where his interest for playing the keyboard flourished.

His deft fingers move swiftly across the keyboard which creates a soulful rhythm.

“I also play the bass guitar, but my focus is the keyboard.”

Sing Hosanna

With the voice of an angel, Nondumiso Maseko the band’s vocalist, shared her experience with music and admitted she discovered her talent in church.

“I was appointed as a worshipper in church and that’s when I built the confidence to venture out and pursue singing,” she said proudly.

Nondumiso had gained national success when she had the opportunity to partner up with a band known as the Craft of Worship, who recorded their music at the Soweto Theatre in 2018, which was a moment she considers to be the highlight of her singing career.

Town’s own Kenny G

The band’s exceptional saxophonist Sibusiso, began playing drums at church and then tried his hand as a vocalist but later moved on to playing the piano and guitar.

“I was introduced to music when I started listening to gospel music,” he shared.

Only having started to learn to play the saxophone about a year ago, Sibusiso has taken to the sax like a duck to water.

I’ve always wanted to play the saxophone. It is an expensive instrument to have and by the time I was able to afford one, I was determined to learn to play it.”

Where will they be performing?

Each band member, each talented in their own way, bring their own flare to the group which makes Blaque Note unique.

They believe it is their mutual respect for each other that binds their friendship.

Practicing for almost 12 hours weekly, the members of Blaque Note are hard at work as they have been promoted as the official house band to perform at the Newcastle Farmer’s Market, set to take place on June 29 at The Pines Wedding and Conference Village.

“We will be playing different genres of music from funk to house and soulful jazz. “Our music aims to speak to the youth and the older folks. People in attendance can expect music they can sway to and even dance to,” concluded the group.
