Readers are leaders at Youth Month event

"Readers are leaders because if you read, you are expanding your vocabulary as well as broadening your thinking capabilities. To learn more is to know more."

Youth Month was celebrated at the Sithembile Library recently, with learners taught the importance of reading.

Staff of the facility hoped to broaden young horizons, through commemorations in June. Mduduzi Ntombela, a cleaner at the library, explained to the youths the details leading up to the 1976 uprising.

“Back in the apartheid era, there was only one language used as a medium of learning and that was Afrikaans. The youth of ’76 fought against this rule, which led to them marching in the streets of Soweto. They were assaulted by the police and they retaliated by throwing stones at them. That is when the police started shooting and killed Hector Peterson among many others. Many people have died for the freedom you have today so make sure that you use education as your key to success. You have a right to come to the library and your responsibility is to make sure that you stick to the rules of the library.”

Siya Ndima, a Sithembile resident, stated: “Readers are leaders because if you read, you are expanding your vocabulary as well as broadening your thinking capabilities. To learn more is to know more.”

Learners were also taught the correct way of handling books, and learned about the process of becoming a library member. Librarian, Londiwe Mzila advised them on subjects they will need to study, in order to qualify as librarians.

Library Cyber Cadet, Phumelele Cele added, “I am here to help you with use computers, whether searching the internet or sending emails. We all need to stick to the rules and not use the internet excessively.”

At the end of the day, learners were treated to snacks and fruit, and encouraged to make use of the library to improve and empower themselves.
