His trip was cut short when his 14-year-old nephew witnessed two men break into the home at about 2am.
“One pointed a gun at my nephew, telling him to shut up. The men stole my brush-cutter and ran off. He called his mother, who is my sister, and she then phoned the police, who said they were sending a van. Only after another call to the police did they respond at 11.15am,” explained Mr Zungu.
He added that police were taken to the home of the man who purchased the stolen brush-cutter.
“The police did not do anything; they did not make a report or conduct a search – nothing. When I returned, I also went to that man’s house and was accompanied by the ward councillor and my friend. I called the police again and they did not come out,” he recounted with annoyance. Mr Zungu took his brush-cutter, which the man bought for R700, and left the man’s house.
“The police only showed up on June 17 and found the brush-cutter at my house. They wanted to arrest my sister. I am upset that these police officers are trained to carry out this work, but they cannot. Actually, I have done their job. The robbers were armed; they trespassed… and are still walking around freely. Our police are incompetent and don’t know how to do their jobs,” stated Mr Zungu angrily.
He added that had police responded on time, two more criminals could have been brought to book. Police spokesperson Captain Bongani Nyathi said that this complaint was being addressed by the Uthukela Cluster Commander.
“Members of the community who fail to get the desired assistance when calling the station should make contact with the station Commander Lt Colonel Ngcobo on 082 418 2624,” he added.
