A celebration of health and tradition

“From the way you breathe to the way you stand and walk, can all be contributing factors to your state of health."

Yoga 4 U in Newcastle celebrated International Yoga Day on June 22, at the Fernwood Sports Grounds.

With practical yoga exercises, meditation courses, self-defense classes and Indian traditional dancing, organiser Ashneetha Beeharie said participants appreciated the advantages of practicing yoga.

“Yoga has many benefits for the human body and spirit. We wanted to demonstrate and appreciate the creation and introduction of yoga to humankind, but also, we wanted to have this day filled with a variety of life lessons, that’s we have have a therapist here and demonstrations of self-defense.”

Frik Willemse, who taught the women self-defense, said it was imperative to learn how to defend yourself.

“If you find yourself in a harmful position, use whatever you can find that is around you. A magazine could be a good defense, when you roll it up and fight against somebody who is holding a knife or any harmful object. You could also protect your arm with a rolled up jacket in case you get a cut. In close spaces, create distance, find a way to get away and scream for help.”

Oxygen therapist, Anwar Hoosen, talked about alternate healing.

“From the way you breathe to the way you stand and walk, can all be contributing factors to your state of health.

“I have dealt with a lot of people who are stressed and depressed, and it takes a certain level of understanding and seeing what your body can do, to witness the benefit from therapy that involves alternate healing.”

For entertainment, the dancers from KZN Danceversary put on a superb display of dancing.
