How you may feel when trying cannabis oil for the first time

Fear of the unknown may be the biggest obstacle that patients have to overcome.

People who begin taking cannabis oil are unlikely to feel anything right away, according to Dr Regina Hurley.

“After three weeks, patients say they begin start feeling an overall sense of well-being. They notice they do not need strong pain meds anymore. Diabetics may realise that their glucose is coming down and they don’t need so much insulin. People on blood pressure tablets realise that their blood pressure starts coming down. Their mood is better. Their family members will say they are much happier. Children who are taking the CBD for ADHD are more focussed. They can concentrate and they do better at school. It is not an instant thing and people should not expect any changes for a month. We start patients on very low doses so that they can get used to the product.”

Fear of the unknown may be the biggest obstacle that patients have to overcome.

“Most people are afraid of the effect. Some of them have had a bad experience before with something that was not tested. Some people may have smoked weed in their teenage years and had paranoia and they don’t want to try cannabis oil now. However, the majority of the people who have taken it have had an excellent response, from what I have seen.”

Reminding people that there are no side-effects if a patient takes cannabis oil in the recommended doses, Dr Hurley claims that the worst that will happen if someone had to drink a whole bottle of cannabis oil, for instance, is that you may have a headache or feel sleepy.

“Medicinal cannabis oil is mostly CBD, with a very small quantity of THC to balance out the CBD. THC is the part of the cannabis plant that makes you high, so if someone gives you a whole bottle of THC, then you will get the paranoia and the psychosis,” she explains.

“It is important to know what people are giving you.”
