Stolen stock recovery turns violent

When the team reached the safety of the main road, while still being shot at, they realised that during the harrowing escape three of the cattle and the trailer tailgate had been lost.

Gunfire erupted at a stock theft recovery recently.
Members of the Vryheid Stock Theft Unit, along with the complainants, were hot on the trail of a stolen herd of 14 Bonsmara cows, which were reported stolen overnight from Metzelfontein Farm in Gluckstadt last Wednesday (19 June).

The shooting left bullet holes in the trailer, in which the cows were being transported.

The trail led the team to the Thaka Forest area, where the cows were reportedly seen.
After locating the stolen cattle however, and beginning to load them onto a trailer, the Stock Theft Unit and complainants came under fire from those believed to be behind the stock theft incident.

A bullet pierced the metal above the wheel arch.

Nine of the 14 cows were herded onto the trailer. When the team reached the safety of the main road, while still being shot at, they realised that during the harrowing escape three of the cattle and the trailer tailgate had been lost. The bakkie and the trailer were left riddled with bullet holes. Fortunately, none of the team members involved in the recovery were injured during the shooting, and a case of attempted murder has been opened.
