Deep rural businesses in the spotlight
Deputy Director of Trade Promotion for SMMECC, Thulani Zulu, said the chamber wants to see businesses strive in townships.
The Small Medium and Micro Enterprises Chamber of Commerce (SMMECC) in the Amajuba District, will host an all-new Sunday Township Market, on August 4.
The SMMECC’s purpose is to bring together about 500 Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) within the district to actively participate in the boosting of township business.
Deputy Director of Trade Promotion for SMMECC, Thulani Zulu, said the chamber wants to see businesses strive in townships.
“We want to see black township businesses in one place every Sunday and the whole idea is have consistent dialogues, targeting especially deep rural businesses. The black woman who is selling cabbages at a corner street is our most important target, every type of business including the elderly who wake up early in the morning to sell vegetables on the sideways of the streets. Such will make sure we create sustainable jobs for the community.”
Zulu added every business should be taken seriously.
“It’s time we started respecting all jobs and taking ourselves seriously. Normally such things, markets, are done by individuals and we’ve seen quite a few in Newcastle, but the SMMECC Sunday market is run by a group of young people who have traveled far and wide, to study and analyse how the business of such a market would uplift a community.”
Zulu further expanded on the talent of undiscovered entrepreneurs in the district:
“There is immense talent from young talented entrepreneurs within the Amajuba District, but they do not have a platform to properly showcase what they have to offer the community.
The chamber has called on its members and black owned businesses to heed the call of social cohesion and business activities under the Sunday Township Market project.”
The chamber is urging all entrepreneurs in the district to attend the official launch of the Sunday Township Market on August 4, at the intersection of the N11 and Dr Nelson Mandela Drive, between Madadeni and Newcastle.
