Checkmate at Andante chess champs in Ladysmith

The school with the highest points took the floating trophy, and there was also a trophy for the person with the highest individual score

It was hushed silence as young minds concentrated on their next move, with the aim of putting their opponent’s ‘King’ in checkmate.

Andante Independent School hosted their seventh annual chess championships recently at the school.

Speaking to Andante principal Mrs Schirge, she says the chess championships have grown over the years, with many different schools having won the coveted title.

This year’s event saw seven schools going head to head, namely St Chad’s, Egerton, Monument, Aloe Park and Winterton primary schools, as well as the Emnambithi Chess Group and Andante.

The arbiters on the day were Ladysmith High School. Teachers from the various schools assisted with the scoring.

The school with the highest points took the floating trophy, and there was also a trophy for the person with the highest individual score.

The children who finished in first, second and third places were rewarded with medals.

The games were played in good spirits in the classrooms and you could just about see the smoke rising from the players’ ears as they concentrated hard on coming up with good attacking strategies. The day was enjoyed by one and all who attended, with everyone now looking forward to the next chess championships.
