Members made their way to the AFM Church on Saturday, where it was time to learn and share. Although the topic focused on cancer, ARK Support Group member Shailen Sunderpersad pointed out that everyone who has suffered a debilitating illness would relate.
It was agreed that when an individual is diagnosed with cancer, negative feelings ‘come and go’ and acknowledging and dealing with these feelings is essential for the patient and caregivers.
Some of the elements that bring about negative feelings include treatment-related side effects, severe pain, fatigue and body image. Members discussed that these feelings can often lead to one feeling suicidal.
“I believe that God will never give you more than you can handle,” said member Mike Bessinger.
This was echoed by all present. Ways that patients and caregivers can counteract negative feelings from taking over include gathering information from health professionals, planning enjoyable activities, joining a support group, as well as eating and sleeping well.
The importance of support from friends and family was emphasised, as well as how the community can help. The next meeting will be held on September 28 at the AFM Church at 2pm.
When the meeting was concluded, members received lunch courtesy of Shireen Kudabuckus, birthday cake thanks to Mike and Miriam Bessinger, and blankets donated from the Gift of the Givers Foundation.
