Sarel builders construct a podium finish

It was a very demanding few months, where teams were required to play weekly including during the school holidays.

Bridge Building: After winning the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) regional competition in Harrismith in February, Sarel’s bridge building team was invited to take part in the International Bridge Building competition in Pretoria on August 30.

The three members of the team are Dihan Kruger, Thubelihle Luthuli and Janz Potgieter. They are all Grade 11 learners from Sarel Cilliers High School, and joined 15 teams from across Southern Africa who took part in the competition.

The third-placed team was from Daniel Pienaar Technical High School of Uitenhage, with a bridge carrying 92 kilograms and a bridge mass of 124 grams. Sarel Cilliers came second with a 123g bridge carrying 201.4kg. The winner for 2019 was Brackenfell High School, for carrying 244.2kg across a 120g bridge.

Cricket: On August 28, Sarel Cilliers u-15 played against Ladysmith u-15 in Ladysmith. Ladysmith batted first and made 109 for seven in its 20 overs, with Zaheer Chenia recording three for 35 runs in four overs and Asanda Nkabinde taking one wicket for 12 in two overs.

Sarel then chased down the total with only one wicket lost, scoring 111 for one in just 13 overs. The best batsmen were Hanro van Zyl with 47 runs and Zaheer Chenia with 39 runs, who helped Sarel to a nine-wicket victory.

Action cricket season comes to an end: A total of 42 learners from Sarel Cilliers joined the action cricket arena with one team in February and due to popularity, the school entered another team. Juniors made up the majority of players, with some playing cricket for the first time.

It was a very demanding few months, where teams were required to play weekly including during the school holidays, but despite this, players excelled with bat and ball. Most league teams were comprised of adults only, with some players involved in the A League. However, the spirit of the Blue Lions prevailed during the daunting season and four games were won by the Sarel Cilliers teams.

A special thanks goes to the Principal, who backed the teams from the onset, and Mr Dube, who transported players from Glencoe to Dundee at night with many games finishing after 9pm. Congratulations to all players for having the ‘never surrender’ attitude of the Blue Lions, and the school looks forward to next year.

In the interim, the female teachers from Sarel Cilliers entered a team – the Sarel Lionesses – for the next round, which begins this week. The school wishes them well and expects it to be great fun.

Tennis: The tennis team travelled to Newcastle on Saturday to face a powerful Ferrum High School team. After a hard-fought tie, Ferrum emerged as winner by 12 matches to six, with the majority of matches being exceptionally close. As was the case in all the matches thus far this season, the youngsters showed their worth under the guidance of the more experienced members of the team.
