Poet’s life experiences captured by the written word

"I have recently developed a love for poetry and it's through writing I can express myself more freely."

Young, determined and self-motivated – these are the personal qualities Nkosingiphile Khulu (22) hopes to bring across in his work as a poet.

While he only started writing poetry in 2017, Nkosingiphile has since written more than 64 poems in English and Zulu, mainly centred on his personal experiences. His first piece was about motivating students to understand the importance of education.

“I have recently developed a love for poetry and it’s through writing I can express myself more freely.”

Born and bred in Sithembile, Nkosingiphile matriculated from Sebenzakusakhanya Secondary School in 2014 and furthered his education at Majuba TVET College with a Diploma in Financial Management. He is currently studying through the University of South Africa (UNISA) towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

“I have also written two books, which have not yet been published. The first one is titled The Castle Builder and I am still currently busy with my second one, titled The Orchestra. I have been struggling to get a publisher, as I am afraid of giving my work to people I don’t know. However, I was approached by a lecturer from UNISA who is willing to help me, but nothing has been finalised as yet. I am still looking for someone to help me publish my work.”
