Police reiterate strict rules for lockdown period

Failure to comply with the laws could result in hefty fines and/or prosecution

Police communication officers Captain Bongani Nyathi and Warrant Officer Mazibuko made a public plea for locals to abide by the laws during the nationwide 21-day lockdown.

Both officers were interviewed on Ukhahlamba Community Radio last week where the rules were read and explained.

Captain Nyathi would also like to sensitise readers to these rules, and has issued the list below. Failure to comply with these laws could result in hefty fines and/or prosecution.

1. The public must stay in their homes and stop moving around unnecessarily.
2. People are requested to stop selling alcohol and cigarettes.
3. People are warned not to attend gatherings, except funerals and there must be 50 people or less. No night vigils are allowed.
4. No funerals to be held inside a tent, in a hall or church.
5. Funeral services must be an hour or less.
6. No visitors are allowed to see people arrested and held in the police cells.
7. Transportation of any kind of alcohol is strictly prohibited.
8. Any person found joking or talking negatively about the coronavirus will be arrested and subsequently prosecuted in a court of law.
9. Any person found roaming around will be fined a sum of R1 500.
