Young Vryheid hockey star selected for Netherlands tour

Grade 8 hockey player Anesu Sithole selected for Netherlands tour, seeks financial support.

Anesu Sithole, a Grade 8 learner, has been selected to travel to the Netherlands in September to participate in hockey activities, marking a major milestone in her sporting journey.

Sithole began playing hockey in Grade 1 at Nuwe Republiek Primary School (NRS), but it was during Grade 5 that her passion for the sport truly developed. Playing as a forward, she admitted that she initially had little interest in hockey because most of her friends played netball. However, her mother encouraged her to continue with the sport.

“From Grade 1 to 4, I was not really interested in hockey because all my friends played netball, but my mother believed I could play hockey and become good at it.’’

Rising through the ranks

Her dedication soon paid off when she was selected for the Under-13 first team while still in Grade 5.

“When I got selected for the first team, I was so happy. I just wanted to make my parents proud because they support me in everything,”

Sithole has since represented the Zululand District hockey team, where she served as vice-captain. She also earned provincial colours and competed at regional level.

The young sports star described joining unfamiliar teams as challenging due to her shy personality, but said the experience helped her grow socially and build friendships.

She further explained that, “I am a very shy person, so being part of a team with girls I did not know was challenging, but I am grateful because it taught me how to make friends and socialise.’’

Sithole shared that she was selected to play for a team called Umbani, where she competed alongside some of the top young hockey players.

Awards and ambitions

Throughout her hockey journey, Sithole has participated in numerous matches and tournaments, earning several player of the match and player of the tournament awards. She has also represented KZN Inland.

Although she aspires to become a doctor one day, Sithole hopes to remain involved in sport, particularly hockey. She also enjoys working with numbers and has an interest in accounting.

“I am now in high school and still playing hockey. I have already received three player of the match awards in four matches,” she said proudly.

Netherlands tour appeal

From September 24 to October 2, Sithole is set to travel to the Netherlands and is appealing to businesses, organisations and individuals for financial assistance to help make the trip possible.

She expressed gratitude to her parents, coaches and teammates for their continuous support.

“I would like to thank my parents for always supporting me, my coaches from primary school to high school for training me, and my fellow hockey players who have become my friends and safe space.’’
