Bergville school loses classroom and two storerooms in fire

"We are calling on people to be calm and sit down and resolve their problems. A school is very important in a community and this is a very unfortunate incident”

One of Bergville’s oldest high schools was damaged in a fire yesterday (April 8).

Okhahlamba Local Municipality fire services rushed to Bambazi High School in Emmaus before 6pm and found that a block was engulfed in flames.

After the fire was extinguished, a classroom and two storerooms were severely damaged.

Okhahlamba Local Municipality Mayor Mlungisi Ndlangisa said that while the cause of the fire is still to be determined, he suspected that in-fighting between learners from this school and another school from Stulwane might have sparked the flame.

“We are calling on people to be calm and sit down and resolve their problems. A school is very important in a community and this is a very unfortunate incident,” said Mr Ndlangisa.

He added that learners and staff will be at a distinct disadvantage when returning to school after the lockdown.

“The school has lost a lot of equipment that was in the storerooms, things like a photocopier, printer and computers. When the children go back to school there will be no resources,” he said.

Mr Ndlangisa has also called for calm. “Let us wait for the police to conclude their investigation and see what the outcomes are,” he concluded.
