Estcourt Muslim community delivers 3000 food hampers

The distributions are part of efforts to assist families severely affected by the Covid-19 lockdown in terms of food security and livelihood

The Al-Imdaad Foundation and the Muslim community of Estcourt have started hamper distributions that will benefit 3000 needy families across all 23 wards of Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality. The first phase of these distributions took place on April 15 and 16.

The distributions are part of efforts to assist families severely affected by the Covid-19 lockdown in terms of food security and livelihood.

In the face of growing needs resulting from the extended lockdown, Estcourt Muslims got together to help their neighbours in the wider Estcourt community.

“The sad part during the lockdown is that many people in our community are experiencing hunger, and we cannot let that go unanswered,” said Moulana Ashraf Manack of the Macksons Group.

Businesses – including Macksons Supermarket, Hyperzone, Emangweni Bus Service, Uthukela Scholar Transport, Macksons Hardware, The Green Grocer and others – are all contributing to these efforts in a bid to give back to the community in this hour of need.

Hampers were generously sponsored by Macksons Group and other Estcourt businesses.

Through their efforts, food hampers will reach some of the neediest families across the municipality.
The first phase, involving some 1000 hampers, was completed last week, with the remainder of the 3000 to be completed in subsequent phases.

Distributions were conducted in compliance with Covid-19 regulations, and team members were careful to keep the necessary social distance, regularly sanitize and don face masks.
Hampers were delivered through a home visit campaign to avoid large groups, with small volunteer teams being activated for this purpose.

The Al-Imdaad Foundation sincerely thanks Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality and Operation Sukuma Sakhe for helping to co-ordinate the distribution programme. The foundation also thanks the Macksons Group and other participating businesses, donors and volunteers. The wider Estcourt community can support this important initiative ahead of the next phase of distributions.

Those wishing to contribute may sponsor hampers at R150 at Macksons Supermarket, Hyperzone or The Green Grocer. A donation receipt will be issued for each contribution.
